Amsterdam in Winter: Things to Do and See
It’s getting cold, leaves are falling and days are getting shorter, winter is coming! One of the greatest cities in Europe to spend some time during winter is Amsterdam. It offers a unique and magical experience with festive lights, cozy cafés and a lot of great seasonal activities. And, also good to know, Amsterdam is a lot less crowded during winter compared to summer!
Amsterdam Light Festival
During December and January the city transforms into an outdoor light art gallery, with stunning lights placed along the canals. Those are designed by artists from all around the world! When walking around the city center you can admire the lights. However, you will get the best experience by taking a boat tour along the canals, where you can enjoy the art from the water.
Christmas market at Museumplein
During the Christmas time the markets offer a great winter experience. At the Museumplein in front of the Rijksmuseum there are lots of different places to get some great gifts, drink a delicious Glühwein and eat some typical Dutch portion of oliebollen!
Ice skating
During winter several outdoor ice rinks pop up in the city. The biggest one is the Jaap Edenbaan, an iconic open-air ice rink where locals skate for fun and exercise. It’s one of the largest ice rinks in Amsterdam. A few times during winter it will be so cold that the canals freeze over, both locals and tourists will skate along the canals of the city.
If you are visiting Amsterdam in the winter you definitely should not forget trying one of the Dutch winter delicatesses like Erwtensoep, also known as Snert. This is a thick pea soup, usually served with smoked sausage, perfect for warming up on cold days. Or try some delicious apple pie with some whipped cream!
